Many of us, myself included, get so excited about starting our business that we just jump straight in and start ‘doing’ without really stopping to strategise and plan.
While we all have reasons why we want to start our own business, and even this particular business, at the back of our minds, we don’t take the time to reflect on these and really understand them.
Your Whys are an extremely important foundation for your business and brand. If you truly understand what they are, you can not only use them to really drive your business, attract the right customers and help you stay focused but will also become a great motivator when times get tough.
I use the term Whys as opposed to Why because we usually have more than one motivator…
We will have a reason why we want to run our own business as opposed to working for someone else. It might be a desire to be in control of your own destiny. You might have a million and one ideas going around in your head and want to be free to pursue them, make your own decisions and reap the benefits. You might have felt like you were being held back or have had a bad experience working in corporate and want to be free. It could be one of any number of reasons.
If you have a particular business idea in mind that you want to pursue then you are likely to have reasons why you this is what you want to do.
And you are also likely to have personal reasons why linked to your life goals. They might include achieving a better work-life balance – reduced hours, no more commuting, etc. and being able to work when you like, where you like and how you like – working around children, working hours that suit you, taking time out during the day to do the things you love or having a mobile business that allows you to travel and still work.
Whatever your Whys, it is important that you take the time to fully understand what they are.
